Should I ask for an IELTS remark?

I took the exam two times, in the first time, I have got the results I expected which was:

L 5.5
R 6.5
W 6
S 5.5

The second time, I was happy from the exam as I was confident that I would get "7" in all except writing but unfortunately I got:

L 5.5
R 6
W 6
S 6

I believe that this results are not mine, this results which are not expected make me frustrated to get the required scores.

Could you please give me your advice?

Hi Hossam,

Your scores in your second attempt are very similar to your first attempt, so that suggests to me that they are correct and that your general level is around a band 6 overall.

It is quite possible for a person's band scores to fluctuate slightly between tests as every test is different and you may do slightly better / worse on different tests in certain areas.

You improved slightly in your speaking and did slightly worse in your reading. Just a few more questions wrong than last time could easily bring you down half a band.

I'm not sure why you were confident you would get a 7 this time - you got 5.5 in listening and speaking last time, so that is quite an expectation to go from 5.5 to 7 so easily.

You didn't tell us the time period between your tests but it can take some time to improve your score.

Hi Heidi,

Probably not because the reading answers are either right or wrong so there is unlikely to be an error.

It's only worth getting a remark if there is a problem with writing or speaking - there is an element of subjectivity with these as they are marked by examiners.

As I've always said about remarks though, nobody can say for sure what might happen so it's really up to you.

I am really frustrated, I think I did well for the third time and deserve a 7 for writing. I have been practicing for a month.

My friend who is a native speaker said that my writing improved a lot.

Should I ask for a remark? Has anyone gotten a different score after the review?

I have taken my IELTS twice and I need a minimum of 6.5 for all the sections.

My scores for the first attempt are:

Listening: 8.0
Reading: 7.0
Writing: 6.0
Speaking: 7.5

And the second attempt was:

Listening: 8.0
Reading: 7.5
Writing: 6.0
Speaking: 7.0

I knew that I did not do well in writing for the first attempt as I did not have enough time for the longer essay and I did not finish the essay. And for the second time, I think I did a much better job and capable to finish the essay. However, the score of the writing is the same for the two attempts.

Should I ask for a remark or should I take another test again?

Hi Nazlin,

Nobody can predict what you could get if you got a remark. You may just get the same.

It's only half a mark less than the first time you took it so it may be right.

There is nothing to suggest it is badly wrong.

It's really up to you.

Can't believe that I got 19-22/40 in academic reading. My minimum mark was 27, while practicing Cambridge IELTS 7-9. Listening was unpredictable.

Also, an increase of 0.5 in writing can give me an overall score of 7.

I applied for EOR in writing it's been almost more than 15 weeks I have not received my results.

I informed to my test centre several times still they say results pending..what might be the cause in delaying my result..I am totally frustrated and in dilemma ...is there any place to inquire beside our own test centre?

But check with your centre what the deadline is and why there may be a delay. 15 weeks seems a long time.

You got 7 then 6.5 - both those score are pretty close so that doesn't indicate any problem with the marking. You may just be at the 6.5 / 7 level.

I've passed IELTS for the first time in my entire life this July.

Today (on the 29th of July) I've eventually got my TRF. Results:

Listening 7.5
Reading 9.0
Writing 6.0

Overall: 7.5 (30,5/4=7,625)

Should I apply for reassessment of the Writing Section?

Just as in the case with my friend, whose Overall Score and Writing band is 5.5 and 6 respectively, I got only 6.0 in Writing (imho, it's just quite unfair).

I can not say that I am great in describing pie graphs and such unnecessary stuff, but, anyway, I think that I deserve band 6.5.

Is it possible to get .5 after reassessment? This procedure may help me to increase my overall score from 7.5 to 8.0 (31/4=7.75 ~ 8.0)

Frankly, I am trying to recall my essay and the table description, but I consider that used vocabulary is relatively adequate and what's more - I've been trying to maintain coherence throughout the written text.

The only serious mistake I've done - I used contraction "didn't". I can speak with authority that I was not under words and could not be penalized for that.

Hi VI,

You are trying to make an assessment of your own writing which you really can't do. It's not possible to know all the errors you may or may not have made unless you are a native speaker / English teacher.

You would want to think about a remark if for some reason you are very sure that the mark is wrong - for example you have had some writing assessed before and you got much higher than 6 or a teacher has said you should be much higher.

Your writing is much lower than your other scores which indicates a possible mistake, but sometimes people are worse at writing than the other skills.

So you need to think about that then decide.

The thing is you haven't said anything that suggests that you should be getting a better grade than 6.5.

You've taken the test twice and got the same score, so that does suggest it may be correct.

Hi Sachin,

Firstly, how do you know you did well in the speaking? Only the examiner who is doing the grading can really judge that.

Your score is quite a bit lower than your others (and 7.5 in listening but 5 in speaking does seem odd) so there is potentially an issue.

But in thinking about a remark, you need to decide how confident you are that your speaking is better than 5? What evidence do you have for that e.g. test taken before, advice from an IELTS instructor etc.

If you are sure that 5 must be wrong from some evidence or experience then it may be worth getting a remark.

Hi Varun,

Nobody can predict if your score will go up or not.

You say you think you did better than 6 but it is difficult to judge your own essay. You need to be very confident that you are better than 6 normally

For example you may know you are better because you have had an instructor who has checked past essays and you have always got much higher.

If you have not done this, how do you know?

So you need to think about whether you really know if you are generally better than 6 or not in your writing.

There's always a chance for everyone a score could change if it is remarked, but you need to assess your particular situation. See some of the discussions below. Why are you sure your score should be higher?

If you have good evidence it should be higher then you may want to consider a remark.

Hi,

Yours is a situation where it may be worth considering a remark as there is quite a difference between a 6 and a 4.5. In other words, it's unlikely you could suddenly get that much worse in your speaking.

However, you have to consider that maybe your score was too high the first time and also that you did a bit worse this time? Only someone objective such as an IELTS instructor can tell you for sure what your level actually is.

Also, when scores go up it's often just by half a band so you may find you get 5.

If you really are sure you did better you may want to go for a remark, but it's really up to you. It's impossible to know for sure what the result could be.

Nobody can predict whether there will be any change.

If you only need a half band increase and you are sure your essay was ok and as you say you got 7 in your other modules, it may be worth a risk.

But are you sure that your writing is as good as your other skills? You need to think about that.

You should check your centre for the cost, but it's more or less the same price as taking the test again.

You really just need to decide whether to get a remark or not yourself as it's impossible to know if it will change.

People usually get a remark if it clearly looks like there has been a mistake with the marking, but there does not seem to be any specific evidence for that with you, so you are just taking a gamble if you do it. So you may want to take the test again instead.

Hi,

I would say in your case you have quite a good reason for going for a remark as previously you have to 7.5 twice in speaking and 7 once.

And you only need that one half band in one module.

It's slightly concerning that you got 6 not long ago though, that is my only concern.

I think if I was you I would be quite tempted to get a remark, but it has to be your decision really as of course it's really impossible to predict what could happen.

Yes you can ask for it. Anybody can. But nobody can know if your band will go up or not.

Yours may be worth considering as you have taken the test before and got 7, but often bands only go up by half a band, which means you may end up with speaking 6.5.

Hi,

My first score in July was L 6.0, R 5.5, W 5.0 and Speaking was 7.5 (I was always confident in speaking).

Later I took an intensive course for six weeks in order to improve my scores, and second time in December I've got L 7.5, R 7.0, W 6.5, but Speaking 5.5!

Sent my text for re-marking!

I can not describe how angry am I because I was assessed many times during my course by experienced tutors and never got lower than 7!

Moreover, I was pretty satisfied with my performance after the exam, because questions were familiar to me and I felt very confident. Now I have to wait for 8 weeks for re-mark, so I missed the opportunity to take my degree course. It seems to me that IELTS is just a JOKE a money making JOKE!

It won't be for money making as the examiner won't make any money by giving you a 5.5.

However, in your case it does look like a good example of where something may have gone wrong and a good case for seeking a remark.

You scored much better in speaking the first time and also you have tutors who have told you you are higher. Those are the kinds of times it is definitely worth getting a remark as you have some good evidence that you should be higher.

I can see why you are frustrated though as it means you have missed a course you wanted to apply for. You could try contacting the course to see if they could provisionally hold a place for you pending the remark.

I have this strong feeling to apply for re-evaluation and hopefully increase my Writing score by .5.

But looking at the cost makes me wanna jump off the apartment building.

I just want to ask you if its worth it to try this, instead of just using the money to buy some goods from the grocery store?

Really it's impossible to say for sure.

Actually from looking at your writing in your post it does seem you may be better at writing than the score you got, but it's possible you made some errors answering the questions in the actual test that brought your score down, so it's still possible, even if you are an ok writer that you got 5.5.

So really you just need think about that and decide. It's just a bit of a gamble in your case unless for some reason you are very certain that you did do better than your score.

on every attempt.

But I needed S:7 and overall: 6.5. I was extremely frustrated. I applied for re marking of my 5th attempt. Meanwhile, I also took another two exams (6th and 7th) attempt. I am extremely happy to share that I got my required score in my 6th attempt with scores (L:8, R:8, W:7, S:7).

I was amazed with my writing score while I was pretty confident on my speaking though. I haven't got my remarking result yet.

Anyways, I am done with my IELTS. Never lose your hope especially when you are lacking by 0.5. It means you are almost there.

There is not much there to suggest you should go for a remark as your scores were quite similar each time (just half a band). This therefore suggests no mistake has been made.

Of course it's quite possible if you have remark they could go up a bit but it's just a gamble. Nobody can predict what will happen.

Hi,

I would like to get your advice about whether ask for a remark or not, the first time I took IELTS I got the following results:

Listening 5.5
reading 7.0
Writing 6.0
Speaking 7.0

Three months later after have taken a course from the British council and have the help of a native professor I got this scores:

Listening 7.0
reading 7.5
Writing 6.5
Speaking 5.5!! D:

I am frustrated because I am fairly sure I did it well in my speaking exam, I felt confident and thought I would have the same score as before or higher.

It worth to ask for a remark?

Yours is a situation where it is certainly worth seriously considering a remark.

As you say, your other scores a much higher and you got much higher last time. So it is possible a mistake was made.

But it's impossible to know if it will change, or if it does what it could change to.

Most common is just half a band score change, but of course it could go up more. For example it could go to 6.5 but I don't know if you need that or 7.

Hi I got my result today on 17th March 2017.

Below are my marks:

L: 6.5
R: 6.5
W: 6.5
S: 8

I was upset with my reading, as i was expecting nearly 8 in that.

I completed my reading 10 Mins before the time and re checked the answers twice. I was pretty confident that i did the best in Reading and Speaking Modules, but somehow the results didn't prove the same for Reading. Pls. suggest if I should go for re-marking or not.

I just got my results:

L 8.5
R 9
W 6.5
S 8.5

I did ielts a few years back and it was a 7. I just need a min of 7 in all my components. Should I wait for a remark or just retake the test this coming Saturday? I mean from what I read above, it seems like there should already been "remarked"if the scores within the components are diff by more than 2 bands?

Hello all,

I sat for the IELTS Academic exam on (21-Jan-2017) and my results came after 2 weeks as the following:

L: 7.5
R: 7
W: 5.5
S: 7.5

I got shocked with the writing as I know I was sure I did very well.

I requested for remarking, and today I got my revised scores as the following:

L: 7.5
R: 7
W: 7
S: 7.5

So, if you are confident about how good you did in the exam, go ahead and ask for a remark.

I took my IELTS General Test in Singapore. I received my score with a 6.5 in speaking. Which I found really surprising. I had it remarked and they changed it to 7.5.

My suggestion is, if you're confident that you should have a higher score. Go for it. If you know that you performed terrible, then don't.

My score during my 3rd attempt R=9, L=7, W=7, S=6.5. However in my previous 2 exams I got 7 in my Speaking. How long does it take before you got the result of remarking. Thank you

I have improved 0.5 in each section except Writing. This is frustrating and I need a minimum 7. Should I apply for a re correction?

The fact that you have taken the exam twice and got a 6.5 twice does suggest that 6.5 is your current level, so it's quite likely the score won't change.

But nobody can predict it. It's possible another person marking could view it as better and the score could increase. But it's just whether you want to risk this or take the test again.

If you are 6.5 though you need to start taking some steps towards improving towards a 7.

In a case like yours, I'd normally say it's seriously worth considering because you only need half a band in the writing, and your other scores indicate you are a fairly high level generally.

The thing is though your scores may have already been rechecked. If there is a big discrepancy between scores such as 2 bands (as in your listening and writing) they are likely to have rechecked it.

However, IELTS don't publish what their exact procedures for this are, and precisely when they would or would not check something so it's not possible to know for sure.

Hi,

I received the results for GT module last week India (first time attempt). Scores are:

L-7.5
R-7
S-7
W-6.5

I needed 7 in every section, as I missed it in writing. I am confident about my writing as I followed most of rules for it such as, coherence, word limit, conclusion, contraction, linking words, paragraphs.

As none of my score difference is 2 band, so I expect examiner did not rechecked it, shall I go for recheck?

As you'll see from previous postings, it's impossible to know if it will improve if you have a recheck.

It's just a gamble - another examiner may view it differently and it could go up by half a band, but there is no way to know.

I just need your advice.

Some candidates are saying that they received 6.5 band in writing and speaking.

Do you think they should go for a remarking so that they may get their score increased?

The point is that how can you believe the authenticity of rechecking by the British council.

Because if marks were raised in revaluation, British council would have to payback the fee so their honesty is at stake.

Why do they bother to increase the scores of the candidates ?

Do only one examiner is hired to recheck the exams of one candidate or not?

Hi,

Firstly, it's really difficult to advise someone if they should have a remark or not - that really has to be a personal decision.

If you have been practicing IELTS and you have a teacher who has been giving you band scores you may be very sure of your ability - so maybe you think the score is wrong.

But you are talking about someone getting a 6.5 for writing AND speaking.

If they got this band for both, that suggests it is correct.

People tend to go for a remark if something looks amiss. For example, they get band 8 in everything but then 6 for their writing. It may well still be correct because it is quite possible to do worse in one area than another - people can be worse at certain skills. But these are the kinds of circumstances someone may consider it.

All the other questions you ask are not possible to answer - you would need to contact the British Council to find out more about the remarking process, but I think you will find that it is confidential.

Highly inconsistent marking in speaking.

I enrolled my 1st exam in the 31st April and scored 7.0 in Speaking. However, I enrolled again 4th June to improve my over all band score and I scored only 5.5 in Speaking(!).

It could be 6.5 or, in the worst case scenario, 6.0; but how come it's 5.5!

I am definitely going to remark and, therefore, I seek authorized reply/comment in this regard.

Hi Rajdeep,

Just because you answered all the questions doesn't mean you got higher than a 5. It is the way you answer them.

Also, just because your friends did not answer a couple of questions and you answered them all does not mean you necessarily did better than them. You are marked on lots of things so other factors matter as well.

I'm not saying that your score is correct, it may be too low, but the reasons you are giving to not show that it should be higher.

I just took the IELTS like a month ago and got a 7.5, 6.5 in writing and 7.5 speaking.

Here is the bullshit part. I am a 30 years old and, I am a native speaker. I was born in a third world country so I have to do all this bullshit, but my parents main language in our home is English.

Out of those 30 years I have lived 22 years in English speaking countries. I have a Bachelors degree and Masters degree from top American Universities.

I have published works in Academic Journals, I give lectures every week in Universities, and I use to teach English Composition workshops at the University of Houston.

Even more ironic, I worked 5 years part time tutoring students to take the TOEFL Ibt test.

My TOEFL Ibt test is 118/120. and IELTS 7.5/9.

Therefore the only possible conclusion is that IELTS exam is bullshit. It is far more expensive than TOEFL with shameful quality.

Just take it for what it is. Nothing more than a scam to milk money. The remarking is like $150USD. Save your money and just suffer through their incompetence like everyone else.

I got my results on 11 Nov 2016 and my overall band score is 6.5.

I got L-7, R-6, W-6, S-7.5 and here I am confident on listening and reading.

I believe, I have written correct answer and I was expected a band of 8 in listening and reading.

It's not usual for listening and reading scores to change because they are not the same as speaking and writing.

They are not subjectively graded by an examiner, they will be marked elsewhere and they are just right or wrong as they have fixed answers from an answer key.

Of course it is possible that an error was made so it is up to you if you want to check, but just so you know that it's more likely than not that they will stay the same.

Why are you so confident they are wrong and you should get 8? Have you taken timed practice tests to check your score?

To check the possible overall band you need to add them up and divide by 4.

Hi, I just got my IELTS result, and while I scored 8.5 both in the reading and listening tasks, I got a 6 and 6.5 in writing and speaking part.

Given that I took a CAE test two years ago and scored higher, and that in those two years I've been studying and living in an English speaking country, obtaining high grades at the University I find this discrepancy frankly laughable.

I've heard more than once that Examiners stick to lower grades knowing well that especially in the writing task 7 is required for application to a University and therefore students are likely to re take the test, therefore other money will be paid.

Should I go for the EoR or take another test altogether? IELTS wont see me again, that's for sure. Disappointed 100%.

It just has to be your decision. If you are so sure it is wrong you may want to get them rechecked, but it seems odd (though not impossible of course) that they would both be incorrect.

And remember if scores do get changed it tends to only go up by half a band as if errors are made with marking it may only be slight. But again that's not to say it couldn't go up more than half a band.

But it's impossible to know if it will get changed or not.

It's the same price I think as retaking the test, so unless you are very sure a mistake was made you may be better taking the test again.

Waiting for IELTS Enquiry on Results

Hi,

I took my very first IELTS test last March 2016 and here are my scores:

Listening - 8.5
Reading - 8.5
Writing - 6.5
Speaking - 7

I basically prepared for 3 weeks before taking the test and I really focused on the Writing part. I studied the essay structures the examiners might be looking for and, in general, I think my writing skills will bring me a band score of 7 because I was used to writing research papers in English as an undergraduate student.

After taking the test, I was confident about my performance in the writing part. I was actually expecting a score which is higher than 7. It was in the speaking part that I really had a difficulty in because I was so nervous during the interview. Hence, I was expecting a speaking test score which is below 7. To my surprise, I got a 6.5 in writing and a 7 in speaking.

I requested for IELTS Enquiry on Results (EoR) and I am currently on my 4th week of waiting. I need to get an all-7 IELTS score for each band by August to apply for my target university in Australia.

I'd like to ask if it's a wise step on my part to have my results remarked. Also, while waiting for the result of my Enquiry on Results, what steps can I do to improve my Writing and Speaking skills given my current scores, previous preparation and own assessment of my writing and speaking skills?

Lastly, if ever my scores would not improve through EoR, when is the best time to re-take the IELTS test? As much as possible, I'd like to have two possible chances of re-taking the IELTS test before August if worse comes to worst.

Hi Andie,

Firstly you said that you have already requested an EoR so I would not worry about whether it is wise or not. It seems like it is done.

Regarding steps to take, I would just go through the lessons and model essays on this site and any other info from other IELTS sites to check that you are doing what you should do in an IELTS essay.

Speaking is a bit more difficult to improve online, but again you could check online for tips and strategies and find someone to practice with.

There is not really a 'best time' to take the test. It will be the same whenever you take it.

Hi,

I want to get my Writing and Speaking test resluts re-evaluated.
As the test centres are different for both the tests, am i supposed to send two Enquiry forms for the both tests?

And, I am from India, i couldn't find the option-India in the IDP test centers list.

To whom am i supposed to send my TRF along with the Enquiry forms for the re-evaluation?

I'm a bit confused. You must have taken them at the same centre.

But anyway, you must have one point of contact even if it was two centre, so contact that person/centre and check where it will go.

Speaking dropped from 5.5 to 4.5. Should I get EoR?

Hi i want to know whether i can my marks will increase in speaking by EOR. I got:

W-6
R-5.5
S-4.5

I have done much better in speaking and in my previous result i have already scored 5.5 in each but i strongly think that i should get min 5.5 in speaking unless it was far better than previous time

Hi Ankita,

It does seem odd for your speaking to go down from 4.5 to 5.5 - that is quite a big drop and it seems unlikely that your speaking skills could have got worse unless there was a big gap between the tests and you were not practicing.

But unfortunately nobody can predict what could happen if you had a remark.

I wouldn't say there is anything in your results that stands out as odd as they are all around the same range - 5.5 - 6.5.

You say you did well in the speaking but only the examiner can really judge that as they do the scoring and have the assessment criteria.

Also, if let's say your speaking goes up to 6.5, as far as I can see, you will still only get band 6 overall. Your listening is unlikely to change as that is not subjective - your answers were either right or wrong.

It would be risky but it's really up to you. As I have said before, it's impossible for anyone to know what may happen if it was reassessed.

I would like to ask for any advice about remarking my speaking test as I believe I didn't get a fair test.

My first try for IELTS General I took the speaking test and I couldn't take the others due to an emergency.

Speaking 8
Listening 0
reading 0
writing 0

My second try

Speaking 8
reading 7.5
listening 6.5
writing 6

My third try.

For the speaking the examiner was late about 15 min and I felt nervous seeing other test takers finishing there turns with other examiners while I was made to wait infront of the exam room waiting for my examiner. When he arrived he went inside and I was made to wait another 10 min (while he prepared). My time was at 9 am and I entered the room at 9.25. The security and other attendants were also asking and looking around for the examiner and called him several times on his cell until he arrived. That situation made me feel uneasy and uncomfortable unlike previous times while taking the test. In addition, the examiner seemed out of mood or a bit upset. He was ok with me but very different from the other examiners I met during my previous attempts.

Listening 8,
Reading 9
Writing 7.5

My previous attempts I scored 8 in speaking.

What would you recommend is remarking a good try or not?

Hi Ahmed,

The basis for a remark would really be whether you are very sure that you did just as well in that third test as you did in the first two tests.

If so, then you may have been scored too low, maybe like you say because the examiner was not doing his/her job well. But only you can decide that.

But if you are saying that you think you did less well because you were made to wait and that made you nervous then your score may be correct.

So you really need to think about those things and decide.

Should I get an IELTS Remark?

I would like to ask for your opinion. My score is like the following:

IELTS General Training - Overall Result 8.5

Listening - 9
Reading - 9
Written - 6
Speaking - 9

I can't believe that I scored 6 in writing section; I conduct business mainly in English, wrote my masters thesis in English and I always got high scores in different English exams (i.e 113/120 TOEFL, Writing 29/30). I am also positive that I wrote essays quite similar to example IELTS General Training tests online and I exceeded the given word limit for both tasks.

I needed at least a 7 or an 8 as a score. I am thinking whether I should take the test again or ask for a remark of the Writing section.

Should I recheck?

Hi Mert,

As I said on here if you read other comments, it is really difficult to know what result an EoR may have.

In your situation the 6 does seem low and you have a fairly good case to think about a remark i.e. your other scores are much higher and you know that your writing skills are quite good.

However, there are a couple of things against it. Firstly, with such a difference in score, it is possible that it may have already been flagged up as an issue at IELTS and looked at again. If this is the case then obviously 6 is correct because the second marker must have given the same score.

But they won't tell you this if you call them so I can't be sure if that is the case.

Also, there are sometimes reasons why even a very good writer gets a low writing score. For example if you misinterpreted the essay and / or letter questions in some way and so wrote the wrong thing, that can bring your score down quite a bit.

Have you looked through websites such as IELTS buddy or others to check specific things that you should / should not do in your writing for T1 and T2?

It may be worth doing that first as you may find that you did make some errors.

So really it is not easy to give you an answer and you just need to consider the things I have said, weigh things up and decide.

I am thinking of getting my writing paper rechecked. I feel I had done better. I need 7 in writing as I am ok in all the other modules.

Please advice, if anyone has done "writing" paper rechecked and has got score changed by 1 band. I need from 6 to 7.

Hi Nathan,

It really just has to be your decision. It's quite possible some people have had their IELTS writing essay remarked and the score increased but nobody can say what could happen in your case.

I can see your score is lower in writing than the others, but it is possible that you made an error in your answering of the question, such as a misunderstanding of the prompt. This could then bring your score down rather than it being an issue with your grammar.

Hi Tar,

It's not possible to predict what could happen. If a score does go up it's usually by half a band rather than a band or more (though anything is possible of course).

You didn't say what band you got before. If it was a 6 or more and you are very sure you did just as well this time, you could risk it. But if it does go up you have to be prepared for the fact you could end up with 5.5, there is no way of knowing if it could go up to 6.

Today I have got my IELTS test result from British Council and my scores are as below;

L - 7
R - 6.5
W - 6
S - 7

I got 6 in my Writing test. I had completed my essay but it did not meet the 'at least 250 words' criteria. My essay was written within the given word limit of at least 250 words.

Should I go for a recheck in Writing to get an increase in marks by .5? or should I refrain from it?

The thought which is bothering me is that, do the marks reduce in rechecking process?

They don't tend to reduce scores so I wouldn't worry about that.

But a remark doesn't sound like a good idea because you say you didn't write enough words. If that is the case then you will have been penalised for it which will be why your score is lower than what you expected.

It is your decision but you need to consider it carefully.

If one band is very different from the rest, then there may be a case for it.

But you have got 5 - 5.5. in three of your tests. That suggests you probably are at that level.

Hi,

Yes you can challenge the score, but you have to pay for it and it is about the same price as taking the test again I believe. Check with BC.

So a lot of people just retake the test.

it's all about the money

I find it disgraceful that a candidate has to pay to challenge their IELTS score. I have students who have paid a lot of money to continuously re-set their IELTS due to low scores. They have really progressed, yet their scores are going down!

Of course this is expensive and quite frankly I believe it's all about the British council making money by forcing students to re-sit their test in order to achieve their desired score.

I do not personally believe that, non-native English speakers are in any position to grade ESL students, especially on their spoken English, when so many have terrible accents (I speak from experience) as I live in the Middle East and I am a highly qualified English teacher with forty years of experience.(if I wanted to learn Arabic, I wouldn't ask a Chinese man to teach me!!) Now I discover to my disgust that to query a students marks, he has to to pay MORE MONEY!

Of course if it is the same price as the test, most students will just re-book a new test. I would like to know WHO, if anyone monitors the examiners?

Hi,

I think only you can answer that question.

There is quite a difference between your reading/listening and writing/speaking scores but is this normal? Are your writing and speaking normally around a band 6?

If you have not had your work checked by an IELTS instructor, though, in the past it may be difficult to know.

You need to think about these things before getting a remark.

And remember you have to pay for a remark, so this money could be spent on taking the test again. That is something else to consider.

Hi,

As you'll see from the comments below, it's really impossible to know.

It may well be that your writing was a 6.5 for whatever reason (some slip ups in grammar, not fully answering the question etc) but then again it's possible someone else could award it slightly higher.

But remember that examiners mark to a standardised criteria so it is more than likely to be correct.

So it's just a gamble and only you can decide.

I completely agree with you (IELTS Buddy). But I am confident that I might have given more than 30 correct answer.

As far I know 20-22 correct answer give 5.5 and 23-26 give 6.0 band score. So i am wondering how come I got 5.5.

Did IDP played a foul game here? as I scored R-6,W-6 S-6.5 in these section.

Should I go for rechecking. Your suggestions are most welcome.

And I filled the EOR form for my speaking module on 6th april. I only want 0.5 band and i am damn sure that it will definitely increase but i just only want to know that how can i check my remark result.

I was lack of 0.5 mark for 7 score and I don't know about my performance in speaking but I'm pretty sure that I did well in writing unfortunately ended with 5.5. Hi Raj,

It needs to be your decision but it seems fairly clear that you are around the 5.5 / 6 level for your writing and speaking as you have got the same score 3 times.

So I would guess they would more than likely not change if you got a remark. Of course reading and listening are not likely change as they are right or wrong, there is no subjective marking with those.

Your page is easy to understand. I like to study with your site. This is so useful. I given my ielts test on October 2014 and i got 5.5 overall marks (listening 5.5, reading 5, writing 5.5, speaking 6.5) but i need 7 band. I want to improve my writing and my reading is so bad because when i read i understand whole passage but when i answer i don't get good marks. so i am very disappointed with my performance. i can do good in listening and speaking but please suggest me how to do practice reading and writing, and how much hours in a day i need to spend on study. one more thing i am not good in grammar so what should i learn for writing in grammar. i have booked my test again on 12th march.

It's really not possible to tell someone how to improve their score in a short message. There are so many tips which is why this site, and other IELTS sites, are large.

You need to go through the reading pages on this site and practice the strategies and also just read generally as much as you can.

I can't advise on your grammar without a proper assessment of your writing unfortunately.

Firstly, I wish you all the best for your prep. The best way to get good score is by reading news papers, particularly Hindu editorial. As I saw so many grammatical mistakes in your way of conveying. so, i wish you to focus more on the headlines of the paper, and how well he constructed it, and take down some vocabulary which you think would help you. Keep this as your daily routine. After a week subconsciously you will see a drastic change

For reading you just leave every procedure you followed till date. Just take a rc and start doing don't mind your time. Just you practice it. After a week you start doing with time. You will see the change

You can go my boy. In this case, if you got any change in your score, money will be credited back into your account. If not, you will loss your money. Moreover I can't give you full assurance to apply or not in this case. it's all depends on your financial situation. If you are sound enough apply for it if else book a slot and study well and get a good score which is required for your visa.

My trf arrived with :

an overall band score 8

a reading score : 9
a listening score : 9
a speaking score : 7.5
and unfortunately a writing score : 6.5

i needed overall 7.5 and in all sections a 7...

so i have asked for a re marking but also applied for repeating the test...

Is the difference of 2 band scores between ANY section the cause of automatic re checking? or difference of 2 band scores between speaking and writing specifically? I am very frustrated...

I have got the same situation, on 4th of March I received my results as follows: L-8, R-7.5, W-6.5, S-8.

I need all bands to be 7.

That was my 7th attempt.
At previous attempt no. 6 I got 6.5 as well but I clearly remember my mistakes and deficiencies in writing part.

Whereas this time I wrote very well and at least a way better than previous time, therefore I applied for remark and also booked the next exam.

The admin of IELTS test center told me that if there is difference in 2 bands between any section then it is automatically rechecked by a different examiner.

I don't know if it is true or they only recheck writing if there is difference between writing and speaking only?

I needed 7.0 in all modules. Got the result today and my Speaking improved from 6.5 to 7.0. So don't lose hope and take risk when you're confident that you did well. :)

Also, it is clear that you have been improving as your other scores have all gone up.

So there is a good argument there for getting a remark, but it's really up to you as nobody can say for sure how you did in the speaking test.

Hi Pawan,

Your other scores seem to be around the 5.5 / 6 range, so your writing score may well be correct.

There is nothing to suggest it is wrong, but there is no way to predict if it could increase if you get a remark. It's possible.

It's a gamble and it's up to you to decide but as it's around the same price to sit the whole test again you may be better off doing that, and work on improving your writing before you take the test again.

There is not a great deal of difference between your writing score and some of your others, such as reading.

So it may be a bit risky to get a remark but as I've said before it's really up to you.

Hi Gurjinder,

That does seem odd to go from 6 to 4.5. That is a very big difference in speaking skills.

Of course your speaking can't have suddenly got that much worse.

It is of course possible that when you got assessed before your score was too high and maybe you were around the 5/5.5 area

This is just guessing of course because I can't hear your speaking to know what level you really are.

So it seems quite possible if you get a remark it may go up but remember it may not, and it may not even go up to a 6 if it does.

Hi Anuj,

Some people's scores will change, some will not. It's impossible to put a figure on it.

In your situation it may well be worth considering a remark as you are obviously a very good writer (you got 8.5 before) and 7 is quite a big drop from that.

The fact that you are a competent writer and good at English generally means that you more likely to be able to have an idea if the score is wrong.

But of course the 7 may be correct as we have no idea of knowing if you did do something wrong in the Task 1 and 2 (maybe misunderstanding the questions in some way so not fully answering them - this can bring your score down quite a bit).

I would seriously consider it in your case but there are no guarantees, so it's really up to you.

It's a big difference but it is possible you did something very wrong without realising it.

It is the kind of thing that may be worth a remark if you really feel that you are a 7 and you didn't do anything wrong.

But as I have said before, it's impossible to know for sure so it's a gamble and it's really up to you.

Hi,

Your writing does seem quite a bit lower than the rest of your results.

But do you have any idea if your writing is weaker than your other skills?

If you can normally write and get around 7 or 7.5 it may be worth getting a remark. Have you had essays graded by IELTS teachers before and been given feedback?

Though of course even if you are normally of a higher skill you may have done something in the test to bring the score down such as not answering the question properly.

So you need to think about those things and make a decision.

2 weeks ago, my friend got result and speaking was not what she expected. After this she objected to the result.

She got 5.5 but after evaluation her score was raised to 6.5.

This mean IELTS results generally are not fair for this reason you must do this. If you are sure your writing, your score could rise.

I was hoping for band 8 in writing...

Hi all. I have just sat the IELTS as part of my Visa requirements to stay in Australia.

My scores were -

L: 9.0
R: 9.0
W: 7.5
S: 9.0

O: 8.5

Scoring over sevens works for my visa but over eights in all categories would give me extra points and ensure a quicker processing time. As English is my first language I was hoping for all eights.

So my question is - is it worth an EOR for my written test? And is it possible for scores to drop after an EOR? If so I won't bother.

Hi Sam,

It's always difficult to say for sure if someone should get a remark.

However it's not uncommon for native speakers to actually do worse than they thought in the writing.

There are certain things that you should and should not do in the Task 1 and 2. If you end up doing something that you shouldn't it could pull your score down even if your grammar is perfect.

That's why it's important to look at tips and strategies before the test, however good you are at English.

I can't explain it all here. Did you go through websites such as this one before the test to check what you should do in the essay and graph / letter?

If not, go through the lessons and model essays and double check you are doing everything as you should.

Require Advice on Reading remark,

Has anyone ever seen any change in reading remark, Just my reading score has a difference of more than 2 bands from others.

Below are the scores

L= 4.50
W= 4.50
S= 5.00
R= 2.00

I need 3.5 in reading, all my other scores are as needed. My reading seem so much lower than expected. I was expecting 4.5.

Any chance if I go for remark?? Can there be a mistake in reading because the difference seems to be big compared to the other scores.

2 is a very low score. How much do you get if you take a practice test? You should do a couple of practice tests and grade yourself to see what level you are. If you are getting much higher than 2 then at least it tells you it may be worth considering a remark.

However, as I have said before on here, it is less likely that a reading test will change if you get it remarked as it is objective - the answers are taken from an answer key and marked either right or wrong. Of course it is still possible an error was made.

English major but did badly in IELTS reading and writing

I scored 9 for my Speaking test and 8.5 for my Listening, but for both Reading and Writing I scored 6. I need to achieve band 7 in both of the latter in order to teach in Australia.

As an English major I find it astounding that I should have scored so low on the last two categories. Is it worth me requesting a remark?

My teaching qualifications were achieved outside of Australia, I am therefore needing to achieve the score of a minimum of 7 before my qualifications will be considered.

Any advice?

Hi Chris,

For both those modules, did you do some practice tests first and look at some tips and strategies?

You should do that even if your English is very good as the reading is difficult, even for native speakers, and the writing has a few things you need avoid doing in order to have a good score.

So first I would suggest looking through a site such as this to check what is rrquired for writing and see if you spot some things you didn't do and how it is graded. And with reading, try a few practice tests to see what score you get.

If you still feel it was a mistake then you might consider a remark, but look through some of the advice I gave others about the process.

Retake IELTS or Remark?

I took IELTS Exam twice. Firstly my score was:

L. 6.0
R. 6.5
W. 5.5
S. 6.5

Some of my friends advised me to remark, but I got anxiety that my score will be increased. So, I took the retest. Unfortunately, my second score was similar with the first:

L. 6.5
R. 6.5
W. 6.0
S. 5.5

Can Anybody give me suggestion, should I remark or retest?

Anybody here got increasing result after remark?

It doesn't seem like a remark is worth it as you would need writing to be increased by 0.5 and speaking by a whole band. You'd be quite lucky to get this.

So I'd say do some more practice then take the test again, but it is up to you.

British Council IELTS First Attempt

Hi,

I recently gave IELTS general for Immigration purpose to Canada,Australia or New Zealand. I scored :

R : 7
S : 6.5
W: 5.5
L: 7.5

In Reading I was assured that my all answers were correct as I had completed that section 20 minutes earlier, no logical understanding issues, and rigorously reevaluated the answers thrice but still got 7 (don't know why).

And regarding writing section used some good vocabulary (and a slang too), absolute lexical resource and appropriate answers in correct format, still got 5.5. Even if I consider that some grammatical mistake might happen, still it doesn't has to be too low.

Shall I go for rechecking for both the above sections or not.

I need a 7 for all sections to apply for work.

My gut tells me that I should order a re-mark, because I know I wrote well (was fluent and it made sense). In fact, it was the section that I was pretty confident about. What are your thoughts?

Hi Navpreet,

It is quite possible for someone to be weak in one particular skill e.g. writing, but better in the others, so your score could be correct.

Are you worse at writing than the other things? You need to think about that then decide.

If you know that your writing is as good as the other skills and you are very confident that you did not make an error elsewhere (such as not answering the question properly - this can bring the score down significantly in certain cases) then it may be worth considering a remark.

There isn't anything to suggest to me that anything is wrong,

You went to two different centres and they gave you 4 and 4.5. So that suggests that your speaking level is somewhere around the band 4 mark.

I smell something fishy both with IDP and BC. My wife took here IELTs last 2009 she passed it but now she just needs to renew it for visa purposes.

She consistently got 6.5 for speaking. Take note she already took it 9 times. This is bullshit.

Hi People,

I saw online 1 person from Nigeria had 6.5 in writing and went for remark. And guess he got 7.5. But it took 50 days for the response to arrive. I also gave my exams in India on 30 July and got L-8, R-7, S-7.5, W-6.

So was planning for EOR. But it takes a very long and its too expensive. In that case we can give a new exam and the results will come more faster than EOR.

Any suggestions people?

I really hope you can help me. I have just taken my first IELTS test and i'm pretty confident about it. Since i've been taking toefl prep and ielts prep. So here is my score

Hi Monica,

I don't think they lower the scores and reissue certificates. Often if a band score changes it is only by 0.5.

I really do not think they would want to be in the position of charging someone for a remark then giving you a decreased score. So you will get either get 'no change' or an increase.

It's not possible to say for sure if your scores were re-evaluated, but it's quite possible as one of the reasons they withhold results is if they need to check them for some reason.

But nobody can say for sure. You could try contacting your centre and tell them that you think the writing score is wrong and that you are thinking of getting them remarked.

It's possible that they may tell you then there is no point in doing this. Obviously if that is the case then they have been looked at again already. But they may not tell you though.

If you can't find out then it's really just up to you to decide whether to go for a remark or not.

Hello sir, I had received my ielts test result today, and this is my first time taking ielts exam.

reading: 5.5
listening: 6.0
writing: 4.5
speaking: 6.0

overall: 5.5 (And i need the overall 6)

So, i am looking for suggestions whether to remark my test or not. Because i feel that i had done quite well during the exam day, such as i understand what is the question asked, and finished the two essay on time. Besides that, i also get 5.5 and 6.0 as a results of my practice essays during the class from my lecturer, two weeks ago before my actual exam day.

So, sir do i have the higher chance to get from 4.5-5.0 or 4.5-5.5 in my writing task? Appreciate your valuable response.

Hi Aaron,

There is always a chance your score will be increased, but it's not possible to say with with certainty if it will be or not.

It is certainly worth considering a remark in your case for two reasons:

1) You have evidence you may be higher because you have had practice essays checked

2) You only need half a band more - it's quite possible another examiner may grade it slightly differently.

Going to 5.5 is possible but less likely.

But you have to consider that 4.5 could be correct. You say you answered the question well, but it is difficult to judge your own answer.

If they investigated your paper it's probably not worth as it sounds like (for whatever reason) they looked at it closely.

Also, to be honest There were some very noticeable grammar errors in your post (I corrected them) so you may well find you are 5.5 unfortunately.

Like all other candidates here, I too am in a conundrum on deciding whether to get a re-evaluation or not.

I have taken the test twice in IDP.
First test score

Listening - 8.5
Reading - 9
Writing - 6.5
Speaking - 8

The test was done a little more than a year ago.
The second test score came in just a day before is

Listening - 8.5
Reading - 7
Writing - 7.5
Speaking - 6.5

I am honestly baffled with the presented results.
I remembered having to check my reading test thrice with the extra 20 min. Yet I understood the fact that it is hard to prove the results wrong. I know I might have changed a lot of my correct answers to wrong ones within the extra time frame.

As for the major drop in my speaking result is hardly justifiable. My first language is not English, but have in many occasions, been recognised as a native speaker by native speakers. I would not say I am at my best on the day when the test was held, but I certainly doubt I performed very badly. Also, I could have understood the drop if it is by 0.5 or 1 difference, not a 1.5 difference.

I have consulted someone from the test centre after receiving my results and even that person could not understand why. Via the conversation we had, she told me I could have at least get a 7 easily and then introduced the request to remark form to me.

I was ready to make a remark request but hold my horses when I realize the probability of getting a higher mark is in fact very low and started wondering if paying more is worth it at all.

I would be very grateful if you could advice me on the matter. Should I go for it or should I not?

Hi Huei,

Ultimately it is impossible to know and whatever you do it will be a gamble.

What you say about the reading is correct. Of course it is possible someone made an error somewhere in marking it, but as it is either right or wrong, assuming it was done ok, it is unlikely to change.

It's not usually recommended to just get listening or reading checked if they are the only ones with a problem, but if you are checking speaking or writing you can just asked for all to be checked.

As for the speaking, you may find it has been rechecked already because there is quite a big difference (2 bands) between that and your listening. If there are odd scores like that it may be rechecked.

It's really up to you, but there do appear to be a few things going against you getting a higher score if you get a remark.

Hi Brant,

It's possible for everyone that their band could get increased, but it is impossible to predict whether it will or not.

The usual reason for requesting a remark is if you think something has gone wrong.

For example, you know you are normally a band 7 writer (perhaps because you have taken the test before or you have been working with an IELTS instructor who has checked your work before) but in the test you get much lower than this, maybe 5.5.

In this case there is a reasonable chance that an error has been made (though the score could well be correct).

But if you are just taking a gamble for no particular reason, which seems to be the case for you, it is a bit risky.

You may be better just taking the test again and doing a bit more study and practice on the writing beforehand.

It's very close to your old score so it may well be correct. Even if you practiced you could have done a bit worse.

It's really up to you - it could get increased by half a band but you'd just be taking a gamble.

You should get a remark if you have some kind of evidence that would point to the fact the score is wrong e.g. your other scores were much higher, you got much higher in a previous test, or your IELTS instructor is very confident you are much higher.

For you a remark is a risk as none of those seem to apply. You are just basing it on the fact you think you did well, but it is difficult to judge yourself.

My tutor, a british council examiner, suggested that I should go for a remark since he knows what band score my writing is during our reviews and he said Im always consistent. He is actually not allowed to score my writing exams but instead he always write pass or fail.

I always pass in our practice exams and it means I always achieve a band score 7. I was able to tell him my structure of my last writing exam and he said it was okay.

Is it worth it? To apply for a remark on my writing exam?

Is it advisable to apply for a remark for both speaking and writing? Because I am
planning to apply for an EOR on both S and W. I just need a 7 on writing since I already got a 7 on my first attempt on speaking.

I am quite aware that my result can be combine as long as I retook the exam within 6 months.

Should I ask for a writing EOR only?

It's really just a gamble in your case as to whether your score will go up or not.

Your tutor said you are a 7, but 6.5 is close to 7, so it is still possible your score is correct. You could have done something to bring the score down a bit from 7.

So yes, you can ask for speaking and writing to be remarked, but it's impossible to say whether your score will change or not.

My first attempt last year S-6, L-6, R, W.5.5 and now recently in Oct 2016 my score is S-7.5, L-7, R-6.5, and W-5.5. Now, I need at least 6 in all whereas writing I scored 5.5 and need only 0.5 to be mark of 6.

Is it wise to go for re-evaluation...pls suggest.

It is difficult to judge in your case and it would really just be taking a gamble - it may go up, it may not.

You improved in your other scores, so it may be that your writing has improved and it should be higher.

But then again, you got 5.5 before, so it's quite possible that you got that again if you haven't managed to improve it much, or you have improved but made some kind of errors.

I HAVE stammering from childhood. Before exam I have submitted all my doctor's certificate to bc, and they accepted for special accommodations but I got 4.5 which stopped me to achieve 6 with 0.5.

you could ask your centre to check if they definitely took the stammering into account. But as for going for a remark, please take a look at the advice below. It's really not possible to predict in your case whether your score may increase or not.

Hi Heena,

In your case as you got 7 the last three times and I assume you only need that 7 to have the overall scores that you need, it could be a risk worth taking. If bands do go up, it's most likely it will be just a half and that is all you need.

But nobody can say what will happen. It is possible that for some reason you did slightly worse this time than the others, so your score could end up staying at 6.5. It's just a gamble as to whether you want to spend the money on a remark or taking the test again.

If your other scores were unexpectedly high and you don't think you can get them again, that is obviously another good reason for risking a remark.

Hi, I received my scores this morning and they were as follows:

listening 8.5, reading 7.5, writing 7, but only 6.5 in speaking. Overall 7.5.

I'm really disappointed because I feel like I should've scored higher in speaking.

My issue here is that I need to get at least 7 in each section so I was wondering, what are the chances that my speaking goes up half a band if I decide to get it remarked, considering I scored higher in the other sections?

Hi Jamal,

It's just a gamble unless you have some reason to know that you should be higher in your speaking.

For example, you may have had IELTS lessons and your tutor is sure you are higher.

It's possible it could get increased but there is no way to know.

If you are very confident you did well and are better than 6.5 then you may want to risk it, but you need some firm basis to feel it should be better.

Hi Yasser,

It really depends on how well you know your own ability.

If you have reasons to be sure you are much better than 6.5 (for example, you've had tutoring and the IELTS tutor has scored you before) or you just know you are very fluent, then you may want to consider it.

Bear in mind though that with the quite large differences in your other scores to your speaking it's possible it has already been looked at again.

My tutor also said go for rechecking and definitely will changed.

It needs to be your decision, but yes you have a good case for rechecking. A fall of 6 to 4.5 in speaking is odd as there is a big difference between somebody who is 6 and somebody who is 4.

There is always a chance, but it doesn't seem that you have any particular basis for getting higher scores except that you just are taking a gamble. You can try it but it may not work.

They don't normally decrease scores, but normally you go for a remark if you think something has gone wrong. You don't seem to have much evidence for that apart from thinking you did better, and it's difficult to judge yourself.

So really if you do go for a remark it's just a gamble in your case.

The reason that someone would normally go for a recheck is if they think something has gone wrong. In other words, you know you are higher than 6.5, but you have said nothing about that.

So really nothing can be predicted. It's just a gamble and it's up to you whether you want to risk it or not.

Does it mean it will 100% sure be that on the report form they send me?

Secondly I am applying for a Visa and require an 8 AT LEAST in EVERY section. Should I get it remarked? Would I have a chance? It is IMPERATIVE for me to get that 8 in writing so I can apply for my visa.

Yes that will be the final mark. Nobody can predict if your score could go up or not, it's just a gamble. If there is some reason that you know your writing is much better than the score you got you may want to reconsider a remark.

If you are confident enough about your writing and speaking score more than what you have got then surely you should go for reassessment. I want to share my story.

I gave exam in British council and I got below score

Listening: 6.5
Reading 7
Writing 6

I was confident enough to get 6+ bank in speaking without wasting time, I apply for reassessment for speaking and you know what I got 7 band in speaking.

After that my final score is as below

I am letting you a secret which if you follow will have sure success. Forget about reevaluation it's fake and not of use and more over its money making game.

Secondly, you all asking this guy is double useless because he doesn't not know anything. If you see his comment most of the place he used common word like we cannot say, there is no guarantee etc etc.

Now, will let you the secret while applying for ielts exam - don't select in your form that you are opting ielts for higher studies or immigration purpose...just tick it's for my reference or anything useless. Because they all know the criteria of minimum point 7 for Australia and 6 for Canada and accordingly they do program to reduce to 5.5 in any module to rewrite. This is business and moreover don't select IDP for this exam.

Firstly, there is no guarantee and it is impossible to say if a re-evaluation will be successful - those are facts so that is why people need to be told that if they ask.

Secondly, what you are saying about what to write on the form is nonsense. The examiner does not see any of the candidates application details so they have no idea what they are applying for - they just receive and mark the exam paper.

These are the details from the BC site about applying for EoR:

"If you did not receive the score you expected, you can apply for your test to be remarked. This is called an Enquiry on Results.

If you would like to make an Enquiry on Results, you need to apply at the centre where you booked your test no later than six weeks after the test date. You can choose which parts of the test you want to have re-marked.

You will have to pay for an Enquiry on Results. This fee will be refunded if your score is increased for any part of the test. Enquiries on Results take 6 – 8 weeks to complete."

Nobody can know if your score will increase. Only to a EoR if there is some reason that you think a mistake has been made.

What is the 'system' that you think is changing the scores? The examiner gives it a mark and then an admin officer would put that into the system.

Are you thinking the 1000s of officers are all trained to change the scores the examiner gave? Or the computer is set up to automatically change them? Both suggestions make no senses as it would cause chaos with everyone asking for remarks etc.

I have no connection to the 'system', but I know how it works.

Some student's blame the test when they fail a few times instead of their own abilities, but if you are not getting the score you want, unfortunately you need to keep studying. It is a difficult test and it takes time to climb bands. Learning a language is never easy, and it is more difficult for some than others.

The thing is, with those differences in your scores, it's likely they would have checked it again. That is what is usually done if there is a big discrepancy between the scores.

However they don't advertise exactly how that works so I don't know if the fact you got two 6s may have meant that did not happen.

The reading is not likely to change as that is either right or wrong.

If you have some evidence that you should be much more than 6 in writing (i.e. someone knowledgeable as objectively assessed your writing on several occasions and confirmed it) then you may want to consider the remark.

Wrote IELTS thrice and interestingly, scores were same on all three occasion; L 8.5, R 8, S 7.5 and W 6.5.

I have heard that if there is a difference of more than 2 bands in any of the component then they already check it twice before declaring the results.

Wondering is it correct? OR should I think that I may go for re-check.

NOTE: I don't think that my writing in at least two tests was below 7 band!!

It's only worth going for a remark if you have a good reason why you think the mark is wrong, not just because you wanted a higher score.

So for example if you have done the test before and got much higher (e.g. 6.5) or you have had an IELTS tutor who knows you are higher then it may be worth it.

Otherwise it's just a gamble. Yes you could get a 6 instead but there is no way of knowing it that will happen or not.

I'm just going by what is the information on the internet as they don't publicly say what they do. If you look it will say in most places that that is what they do. I really can't say for sure then. If they say that, it is up to you if you wish to get a remark.

Hello Ielts buddy,

I have a question regarding the EOR. I took the exam in mid-November and applied for EOR as soon as my results were out a couple of weeks later. The result still isn't out but hypothetically, if it goes up, will the issue date (the one at the top) be the day I sat the exam or the day my result was changed?

This is what it says on the official IELTS Site:

"IELTS results are valid for 2 years after the test date"

So even with a remark, it would be valid from when you took the test.

In my second attempt (GT) I got the score - L9 R8 S7 W6.5. The first being (GT) - L7 R9 S6.5 W6.5

In the writing section, I used fairly good words to score well on the vocabulary. However, due to paucity of time, I could not review either of the two tasks. Would you recommend an EOR considering I need a .5 band increase in the writing score.

It was my 3rd trial. Somehow I increased my band in all three module but only got 5.5 in writing again. I am so much dissappointed bcz this time I do my best and also have full confidence that I got 6 in writing.

Now I want to recheck my result but some people said that band may decrease after rechecking. I have no right information about this. Plz advise me that it is possible to apply for rechecking in "WRITING" only. And is that possible that band may decrease after rechecking?

Plz suggest me right way bcz it may totally change my TRF if I will get 6 instead of 5.5 in writing; then I also improve my overall band score to 6.5 and I can easily apply for master degree...

Unfortunately the only way to know that would be if we had a crystal ball ;).

Basically people go for a remark (or EoR) if it looks like something has gone wrong.

For example for whatever reason someone knows they are normally a band 7, possibly because their instructor has marked their practice essays, but they get a 6. If they are very confident they did well in the test it may be worth a remark.

In your case it just seems you are taking a gamble with no evidence that you should be higher (you got around the same scores for your other modules). So that suggests the 5.5 may well be correct.

Of course it is possible that if you get it remarked it could get given a 6, but there is no way to know that.

So it just really has to be your decision as to whether you want to take that gamble or just do the whole test again.

One argument that there is for having a remark in your case is the fact that you got the scores you needed in the other modules. If you take the test again there is the danger you get 6 in your writing but then a 5.5 in something else.

Nobody can know the chances of it increasing.

You should only get a remark if you are quite confident something has gone wrong and you were given a lower mark than you should have got.

If you think the marks are right then you need to do more training then take the test again.

Yes it is odd your score went from 8.5 to 6.5, but is it possible you did make some error you are not aware of such as misinterpreting the graph or the essay question?

Either of these errors on reduce your score quite a bit.

IELTS Don't actually officially say under what conditions they recheck something.

The general understanding is that they do if there is a two band difference, however somebody recently on here said they spoke to IELTS and they denied this.

But you should not get a remark just because your other components are good. Some people are good in some skills but weak in others.

You should get a remark if you believe an error has been made and your writing score should be higher, not just because the other ones are higher.

If you think an error has been made then it may be worth it as you only need half a band, but it's impossible to know if it will change or not.

On PTE, I scored 81 in writing. I scored 90 in both vocabulary and grammar.

I was very confident about my writing. The topic I received was regarding extreme sports. I spent 10 minutes in writing session to double check any spelling errors or grammatical errors.

Just feeling confident is a bit of a risky reason as you are judging your own writing, which is difficult.

If you have some kind of evidence that you are normally better, for example an IELTS instructor has looked at your essays before and advised you of such, then it may be worth it.

Also it depends what you need. If it is just half a band then it is more worth the risk as it's less likely to go up by a whole band, but half is possible.

Also as there is quite a big gap between your listening and writing it is possible it was looked at again already.

Really you just need to decide whether you want to take the gamble or not or just pay to take the whole thing again.
