Hi Jefferson,

There is nothing you can do. You can't do the speaking test on a separate session to the other modules.

You'll have to do the whole test again unfortunately.

Do we have provision to see how much time left?
by: Anonymous

Hi,

This is chaitanya. I am have a quick question.

Will I know how much time is left in reading section or writing section? To be precise I need to answer 40 questions in 1 hour in reading section.

Will I be able to see how much time is left? As mentioned by IELTS they did not allow any watches into exam hall.

Thanks

Hey I could not speak for one minute on cue card task in my speaking test. How would you think it will affect my score?

And someone told me we have to use the provided stationary otherwise the computer will not detect your answer.

Is that true?

Actually you should be aiming to speak for 2 minutes, not one.

But anyway, it's impossible to say how, or if, your score could be affected as you are marked on your performance over the whole test - you are now downgraded suddenly for what you did.

I've never heard anything before about the type of stationary you use and the computer marking. Besides, the test is marked by people, not computers.

How do the timings work on the day of the IELTS test?

by Lilosa

HELLO!

My question is:

In the beginning of the test, do I receive a booklet with the whole listening+reading+writing part at once? I mean, if i don't use the 60 minutes of the reading part, can I use the amount of time I have left, in the writing section?

Something else: on the writing section (task 2), if my time is almost up and my essay is still rather small, should I try to work on a longer third paragraph and try to reach 250 words, NOT writing a conclusion, or should I rush to write a conclusion and have an essay of about 210 words, let's say?

Looking forward to an answer!

Maria Elisa

Taking the different parts of the test
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

You are given each section separately one after the other, not all in one booklet, so you have to do each part in the allocated time.

I don't think there is really an answer to your second question.

It would depend on what you had written before. If you already have two strong body paragraphs that have answered the question you may be best to do a conclusion. But if you have weak support you will want to strengthen that first.

Really you want to practice and plan to make sure you don't get in a position where you are not reaching the 250 words because whatever you do it is going to lower your score.

Thanks

If English is my first language am I exampt from the IELTS Test?

Can some people get away with IELTS?

I know one guy from Africa and he told me that he does not need to take IELTS exam to go to uni because english is his first language.

In his country english is official language because it used to be english colony but definitely its not his first language.

Can i also say that english its my first language?(if he can do it).

You should check with the requirements with the university or employer that you are planning to join.

They set their own requirements in most cases (and of course immigration may have some requirements too, if it is for employment).

Can we take different IELTS modules at different times?

by Prateek

Hi,

I have a query regarding the IELTS exam.
IELTS exam is composed of four parts namely reading, writing, listening and speaking.

I wanted to ask whether I will have to give all the exams at one go or I can schedule them one by one?

Also suppose if I score lesser band than expected then how soon can I re-do the same exam? Is there any limitation that you can only sit for the exam after certain number of days?

Please let me know at the earliest possible. Thanks in advance.

I look forward to hear from you soon.

Taking the IELTS Test
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

You will have to take them all as part of one test. You can't take them over different exams times.

They will need to put all your scores for that test together to give you your overall score.

For your second question - in the past you had to wait to re-take the test, but now you can take it again as soon as you want.

Hope that answers all your questions,
Thanks

IELTS Immigration Australia
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

I don't know anything about IELTS and immigration to Australia so you would need to check on a discussion forum related to that, or with the Immigration Service.

But I am very sure that if Australian immigration have asked for overall band 7, then that is what you will need, and therefore band 6.5 would be 0.

But like I said, check elsewhere to be sure.

Thanks

IELTS Test Online
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

You can take the IELTS test without doing any courses. That's up to you. People just do courses to help themselves prepare and of course it could help to get a higher score if you have someone with experience to give you tips.

You can't take the test online at the moment. You have to go to a test centre on the day of your test.

Getting feedback from the IELTS test
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

That is just down to practicalities. Although it would obviously be very useful to find out where you went wrong, you can imagine the amount of work that would create if feedback had to be given to everyone who took the test.

That would mean the examiner would not only be grading but would also have to write out some form of feedback, because if this was available everyone would want it.

So it would not really be possible.

Thanks

It really is just up to the institution you are applying to to decide what they want. So you would need to check with them or on their website.

They will specify what their entrance requirements are and whether they will accept IELTS and / or something else.

As I said below it is really up to the immigration rules of the particular country you want to go to, whether it is for work or study, or the criteria of the institution.

Decide where it is you want to go and then contact the organisation that you are applying to and ask them what is required.

If you are new to the test it is probably best to first familiarise yourself with the test.

Try a full IELTS listening test

Look at some IELTS models essays and graphs (or IELTS letters if you are doing GT).

Finger Scan in IELTS

by Newbee

Hello Folks!

I have a question about the test date. I have taken the test back in 2012 and now I am going to try again. At first time I am taking, I don't remember that they take my finger scan. Thus, If they took my finger-scan, I also don't remember which finger it was. So, this time, how I know/verify my previously scanned finger? Are they still storing it? I am left handed, I maybe gave my left index, but not sure. Please, if anybody knows/experienced this, let me know. Cheers and Thanks ;)

by: IELTS buddy

I'm not sure why you are concerned about that, but I'm sure they would do a new finger scan every time someone takes the test as it is done for security purposes and they would need to check who you say you are each time. But if you want to be sure, check with your local IELTS centre.

Hi ss123,

I don't know about the quality of administration in each centre but as regards the marking of speaking - the test is standardised which means examiners should be giving the same scores wherever they are and wherever someone takes the test.

So for scoring, it should not make any difference whether you take the IELTS test at British Council Center at Anna Nagar or IDP Center at Chetpet.

IDP India

by Pragya Sharma

India IDP team is very careless and doesn't think about students at all. I've requested IDP India team to provide me new test date, but it seems that they are least bothered about the future of any student, which is quite sad in case of such a big and recommended organization like IDP.

As from the day one after the registration there is no communication and mail from IDP India team to me, which clearly show that I was not in the list to the communication for the candidates.

Due to their negligence I didn't get mail regarding venue change and as a result of which I couldn't be able to reach there on time and the representative there accepted the mistake and told me to put mail to IDP India team so that they can correct their mistake and provide me new date.

Unfortunately they are continuing their negligence in my case, even after 5 days I didn't receive any mail from their end as well as no declaration regarding new test date. I hope to get positive response from your end, so that student like me won’t have to compromise with their future.

IELTS Results Withheld - Quality Control Procedures

by Alexandra
(Australia)

G'day,

I have recently sat for the IELTS test, Academic, with the following results:

L 8.5
R 8.0
W 5.5
S 8.5

My results were withhold as "as part of the quality control procedures designed to protect the integrity and security of the IELTS test".

The score for the writing was a shocker....

Is there any point in remarking? As I need at least 7.0 for the writing component. It would be highly appreciated if you could share a thought or two!!!!

Does too much data description in Task 1 Academic lead to low scoring?

Regards, A.

IELTS Quality Control Procedures
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

I would say in your case given the big difference in the score and the fact that you were actually told they had been withheld for quality control it's pretty definite they have been looked at again so a remark is probably not worth it.

Have you been through all the IELTS writing lessons for Task 1 and 2 on this website? Maybe you did something wrong if you expected much better.

Yes, writing lots and lots of details could reduce your score for Task 1.

You need to show your ability to identify the the key changes or key points rather than just describing everything you see.

That's why you need to make sure you have gone through the lessons on this site.

But it's not possible to know whether you did anything to cause this or, if you did, to what extent it may have affected your score without seeing your actual answer.
