How long to speak on each question in part 3?

by Paolo

Hello,

I have a question about Speaking part 3.

How long am I supposed to speak? Like 1 minute for question or less, 30-45 seconds?

Thanks in advance.

Paolo

IELTS Speaking Part 3
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Paolo,

You have around 4-5 minutes for this part and there could be around 6 questions (if asked all of them) which makes around 40-50 second a question.

But there isn't any kind of fixed time you should speak on each question in IELTS Speaking Part 3.

You may have more to say on one question and speak for over a minute and say less on the next, for example.

So don't worry about that too much. Just think about giving your opinion to the question. The examiner will control the timing if needed.

Can you speak about personal experiences in IELTS Speaking Part 3?

by Julian
(Philippines)

I had speaking test last weekend.

What worries me until now is that in Part 3 the interviewer clarified that I should speak in general coz I was always speaking based on my personal knowledge and experience.

Will it affect my score?

Another thing is that I know I had to expand my answer to get a band score of 7 but when I tried the interviewer didn't give me a chance to speak long coz he always had a question, one after another.

Personal experiences in IELTS Speaking Part 3
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Julian,

It's really not possible to predict anything about your score without hearing your test.

But the questions in part 1 and 2 are more to do with your personal experiences, whereas part 3 is about more general topics, so you should avoid just discussing yourself too much in this part. So you should focus on speaking more generally about the topics.

But that said, it would still be ok to support your general opinions and comments with some examples from your personal experience if they help to explain your point.

Again, with your question about expanding on your answers, it's really not possible to comment on this without having been there.

What if I could not answer the last question?

by Cattleya
(Greece)

Hello,

I took the speaking test a while ago. I did good in part 1 and part 2 but in part 3 I can't answer the last question because I was crying and I had 13 seconds left before the end of the exam.

Will it effect my score greatly?

Thanks

Problem with one question
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Cattleya,

One problem with one question at the end of the test is unlikely to have had a significant impact on your score if you did well in the rest of the test.

You are marked on your performance across the whole test so it's really not possible to pick out one specific thing you did and work out whether it affected your score or not.

You really need to just wait for your result.

Couldn't answer questions in part 3

by Bishwas Adhikari
(Nepal)

Hello Everyone,

Today was my IELTS speaking test. I always had one problem that I used to get stuck in Part 3 of speaking and same happened in test today. Part 1 and 2 really went well without any mistake.

But in part 3, I was not able to think answer because it was an specific question having specific answer but I failed to remember. She asked me nearly 4-6 questions in part 3 but I was able to answer only 3 correctly and for 2 or 3 questions I was really struggling.

What could be my score? Can I get 6? Because minimum score is 6 for masters study.

Please give me hope.

Messing up Part 3
by: IELTS buddy

Hi Bishwas,

It's really not possible to judge how your score could have been affected.

Remember you are marked for your performance over the whole test, not just one part separately.

You must have said something in part 3 even if it wasn't great, and if you did very well in parts 1 and 2 it's still possible to get 6. If it was very bad though it is possible it pulled your score down to below 6.

But without hearing your test it is really impossible to say.
