Band 5 Writing
by: IELTS buddy

If you are not getting more than a 5 in your writing, then you need to improve a number of things:

  • Your ability to fully answer the question and provide support for your ideas

  • Your organization

  • Your use of lexis (vocabulary)

  • Your grammar

These are the main areas that you are graded on.

If you need a 5.5 then you are best concentrating on the first two (organization and answering the question). With some guidance you may be able to improve these fairly quickly, but obviously improving your grammar can take more time.

If you get a 6 in the first two and 5s in the second two, then you will have a 5.5.

All I can suggest is that you have a look through this site – there are lessons to help you improve your score and model essays to view.

Good luck

Thanks for your info. But, would you kindly tell me briefly, what did you mean by **Your Organization**?

Organization

I'm referring to the way you organise your essay, in other words your essay's coherence and cohesion.

Scoring more than a 4.5
by: IELTS buddy

4.5 is quite a low score, so this suggests you have a lot of improvements to make.

See this post that I wrote to someone who wants higher than a 5. The same thing applies.

The information provided on this site is what you need to do to get a better score, so have a look through it.

However, you may find that you need to get the assistance of an IELTS teacher to help you if you are scoring lower than a 5 and you have a lot of improvements to make with your grammar.

A website like this can help, as can a few tips, but it may not be enough on its own in some cases.

Good luck

From IELTS 5.5 to 6
by: IELTS buddy

Hi,

You need to find out why you are getting 5.5 first and then work on what the problem is.

You are assessed under three criteria:

Task response
Coherence and Cohesion
Lexical resource (vocabulary)
Grammatical range and accuracy

So you must be getting 5 in one or two of those.

If it is to do with the first two, for example the way you are answering the question or your organization, then that could be easier to fix with some advice from an IELTS instructor.

If it is your grammar/vocab that will take longer to fix.

But either way, you need someone to check some of your essays and find out where the problem is so you can work on fixing it.

Thanks
