Confusion over some true false not given questions

by P

Question regarding READING part.

IELTS 7
Page 119:

In text: The management reserves the right to refuse admittance.

Question (True/False/Not Given): The owners of the campsite may not allow you to camp there.

My Answer: Not Given (or False). The owners may be in the management, but that's a different thing. The management has the right to refuse camping. So either it is not given (no word about the owners) or false (management!=owners). But the answer is...

Answer from book: True

IELTS 5
Page 105:

In text (heading): YOU CAN TAKE UP THIS OPPORTUNITY IF YOU ARE:

- a full-time student at an Australian university or TAFE college
- presently enrolled, or finishing this year, or you have deferred a year of study
- over 18 years old by November in the academic year in which you apply to InterExchange
- enthusiastic about the experience of a lifetime...

Question (True/False/Not Given): There is an upper age limit for applicants.

My Answer: False. It is stated clearly: YOU CAN TAKE UP THIS OPPORTUNITY IF YOU ARE... and there is >18years old limit.

Answer from book: Not Given.

So, what's the reasoning behind the reading tests? The upper case tells you look for synonyms, don't treat everything strictly. The lower says otherwise...

IELTS True false not given
by: IELTS buddy

1) I would have marked this one as 'true'. I think owners are being used a synonym for management. Even if you do not think they are necessarily the same, if the management can refuse access, the owners must be able to too.

2) I can see why you may want to put false. The reasoning would be though that even though students must be over 18, it doesn't specify if there is an upper limit on this, so it is not given.

Question 1: It is generally believed that large numbers of people needed to build the pyramids.

T/F/NG?

In the Passage: "The conventional picture is that tens of thousands of slaves dragged stones on sledges. But there is no evidence to back this up".

Official Ans: True
My Ans: Not given

I think in the paragraph they just mentioned that there is a picture which many people were needed to build the pyramids. And there is no evidence to confirm that there were actually many people built the pyramids. But there is a conventional picture like that doesn't mean people generally believed what are shown in the picture @@.

That's why I think this should be Not given information. Can anybody explain what's wrong with my reasoning? why this answer is correct?

Thank you very much!

Best,

JLee

Hi JLee,

Actually 'generally believed' is what is thought to be true by most people and 'conventional picture' actually means the same thing.

This is a dictionary definition of 'conventional':

based on or in accordance with what is generally done or believed

So it would be true.

There's also the synonyms of refuse (i.e not allow)
therefore, it must be true..
